Touhou Kaikidan: Mystic Square invites players to engage with four distinct protagonists, each originating from the two previous danmaku entries. Familiar faces such as Reimu Hakurei and Marisa Kirisame make their return alongside former foes Mima and Yuuka Kazami as they embark on an adventurous descent into the enigmatic depths of the Makai. This installment notably introduces Alice Margatroid as a formidable opponent, paving the way for her later resurgence in Perfect Cherry Blossom. While the PC-98 hardware presents some constraints, Mystic Square stands out as the most polished of the series on this platform, featuring gameplay reminiscent of the Windows titles. The game incorporates a modified version of the Dream Bonus system from Lotus Land Story, rewarding players who take bold risks by collecting point items from daring positions.
